What is circuit bending?

Circuit bending is an electronic art that involves the creative customisation (hacking) of the circuits of electronic devices often to make musical instruments, sound generators or visual instruments. 

The term was coined by Reed Ghazala in the 1960s and has been pioneered by the DIY community, low voltage battery powered children's toys, second hand or inexpensive keyboards or drum machines are experimented to create alternative forms of music production.
