There are a lot of reasons eligible students might want to join STEMarts’ Apprenticeship Program, including…
- A $1000 stipend
- Becoming a futures thinker
- Mentorship from STEM professionals
- Helping to create and shape the AstroYouth Taos Chapter
- Joining the international Space Messengers Collective
- Once in a lifetime behind the scenes field trips to the Very Large Array and Meow Wolf
But for past and present apprentices, the biggest and best reason to join STEMarts is to take part in specialized training in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) fields. These trainings combine advanced fields of science with emerging technologies to teach apprentices to create heart-pumping, timely SciArt that leaves audiences in awe not just of our universe, but of the mighty power they hold to shape it.
Do you dream of talking with and asking questions of top-tier scientists who are using their skills to create a better, more global world?
Does the idea of working with professional artists to build interactive 3D art spark your imagination with a million ideas?
Have you ever wanted to build a website that is intriguing, dynamic, and all yours to share what you know?
If you answered “yes” to these questions, and you’re a girl between the ages of 14 and 19 living in Northern New Mexico, the STEMarts Apprenticeship Program may be for you.
Training kicks off at STEMarts Bootcamp at UNM-Taos Hive, where participants meet for hands-on workshops with both onsite and virtual guest instructors. Topics include emerging technologies such as augmented reality, creative coding, and A.I., Augmented Reality (AR), and Extended Reality (XR) Technologies; and, for the science portion, guest scientists in the fields of astrophysics, particle physics, space science, space policy and futures thinking.
Apprentices then join one of STEMarts Lab’s STEAM Teams, which are led by world-class scientists, technologists, and artists. STEAM Teams include Digital Media Arts XR with creative coder Ian Harrison, Space Literacy with NASA Solar System Ambassador Arwen Hubbard, and AI Futures and Data Science with Cyndi Coon and Bethany Rivera. STEAM Team leaders share their knowledge, assign hands-on projects, and guide students in creating multimedia content that becomes part of STEMarts’ cutting-edge SciArt installations.
Apprentice training culminates in assisting and leading STEMarts’ SciArt installations. Apprentices become STEMarts Ambassadors and help to create and present immersive SciArt installations and programs that have real-world applications for the New Mexico community and beyond.
Beyond helping to mold New Mexican women into global citizens and futures thinkers, apprenticeship training builds 21st Century workplace skills – knowledge of teamwork, time management, productivity tools, etc.- that will serve participants for the rest of their lives and careers.
And, perhaps most importantly, participants will make new friends and have a blast learning about STEAM topics and collaborating with their fellow apprentices!
If you dream of creating art that leaves your audience breathless and curious; if you want to make concrete, lasting changes to your community and its legacy; if you live for the next leap in technology and what it means for our world; then learn more here and consider applying for the STEMarts’ Lab Apprenticeship program today.
