As part of the STEMarts Apprenticeship program for girls from Northern New Mexico, we do an annual STEM field trip. This year we were invited for a private tour to the Spaceport in Truth or Consequences. Jamila Gilbert, a member of Virgin Galactic’s comms team and one of their astronauts, conducted a presentation followed by science experiments led by Rani Bush and Bill Gutman.
Latina astronaut, artist and communications director at Virgin Galactic, Jamila Gilbert, was a superstar for the girls in STEAM apprentices that came to hear her speak. She shared her suborbital experience in a way that was both inspiring and poetic. As you see from the photos below, she was a superstar as they asked for autographs and selfies and were full of thoughtful questions. Thank you to all at Spaceport and all our sponsors for making this life changing field trip possible.
STEMarts 2024 Apprentices that attended: Savannah Romero, Kylie Alvarez, Zion Flores, Taylor Streit, Feliciana Mitchel-Gonzales, Claire Legate and STEMarts Mentor: Shaylee Mirabal.
On the way we made a stop at the Q Station, a space tech incubator and coworking space in Albuquerque, opening career pathways to space exploration for New Mexicans.
