We’re excited to announce the winners of the 2025 STEMarts Apprenticeship for girls from Northern New Mexico (ages 14-20): Flora Mack (Taos), Juliana Lucero (Santo Domingo Pueblo), Samara Elling (Santa Fe), and Tulasi Lo Priore (Taos).
Each apprentice will receive a $1,000 stipend to work with the STEMarts creative team on cutting-edge media arts projects. These projects are all about teaching and communicating science, building career-ready skills, and connecting with peers around the globe through the STEMarts International Youth Exchange. A big thank you goes out to the amazing artists, scientists, and experts who will mentor and guide our apprentices throughout the year.
What’s Ahead for the Apprentices
The year-long apprenticeship is packed with exciting opportunities for participants to:
- Build a Digital Presence: Apprentices will create their own websites and write monthly blog posts to share their journey.
- Collaborate Weekly: Through weekly online meetings, they’ll team up on projects and join training sessions with guest speakers.
- Participate in Bootcamps: Apprentices will join four all-day bootcamps alongside new program participants, learning from guest speakers and instructors to build their science and space literacy.
- Train as XR Guides: They’ll learn how to design, install, and guide participants at our traveling XR installations featured at festivals and events.
Skill-Building Across STEAM Disciplines
Our apprentices will gain hands-on experience with some of the latest tools and techniques, working with an incredible lineup of instructors:
- Digital Media Arts: Learn creative coding through the Google Code Next curriculum and create projection art using the Tagtool app with Ian Harrison.
- Extended Reality (XR): Collaborate with XR artist Alison Johnson to create augmented reality experiences and design XR environments.
- Space Science Communication: Work with NASA Solar System Ambassador Arwen Hubbard to contribute to a student-led podcast series and Astro Tours.
- AI for Social Good: Explore how to use AI for ethical and impactful projects with futurist Cyndi Coon and other excitng ZA speakers.
A Pathway to Leadership
After completing the apprenticeship, participants become certified STEMarts Ambassadors. As ambassadors, they’ll step into leadership roles, sharing what they’ve learned with their peers and working on collaborative projects. They’ll also have the chance to earn stipends and paid internships as XR Experience Guides at our traveling XR installations, showcased at art and science festivals in New Mexico and beyond. Plus, apprentices will have opportunities for internships with our partner institutions, such as Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), giving them even more ways to grow their skills and experience.
