STEMarts Lab is planning for its fourth bootcamp for 2024. Each Bootcamp brings together the students that have joined as apprentices and ambassadors and welcomes new students to participate in exciting sci-art tech projects. Participants learn from visiting artists and scientists and from each other in peer to peer training.
Science Visualization Guest Artist
For this bootcamp we beam in Sophia Dagnello, Science Communication Visualization Designer from the National radio Astronomy Observatory. She will share examples of science visualizations such as this animation illustrates the orbital motions of a binary star pair and a planet orbiting one of the stars. If you ever wondered if those images of black holes and galaxies from the James Webb Telescope (JWT) are real or simulated this presentation answers those questions. She will share how the data is collected from the telescope and graphically prepared for viewing with special software. Sophia then shares a free software that allows students to create images for themselves from the JWT raw data. Students can submit their visualizations to a NASA competition.
Art Tech Tools
After Sophia’s workshop we will be working with Oculus headsets and the Tiltbrush the VR painting app to paint in 3D space. The Tiltbrush practice sessions will be led by STEMarts Apprentices, Kylie Alvarez, Raziah Ko, Savannah Romero, Zion Flores with Shaylee Mirabal. This will run until lunch time. After lunch, students will learn to create generative coded art using P5.js.
The P5.js workshop will be led by STEMarts Ambassador, Ian Harrison, artist and recent UNM ABQ graduate. For the last session we will be learning how to use the Augmented Reality Sky Hunt app for our next event, the Los Alamos ScienceFest where STEMarts will have several stations led by the STEMarts Ambassadors.
