Design your ‘Lowrider of the Future’

The STEMarts Design Tool provides the step-by-step process to participate in the Lowrider Design Challenge. Through the Design Tool you will;
  • Explore. Explore the work of lowrider artists to inspire and inform your design.
  • Research. Research the science and technology behind the lowrider cars of today while imagining the lowrider of tomorrow.
  • Brainstorm. Brainstorm ideas for your lowrider design and create new iterations based on your STEM research.
  • Design. Draw your final lowrider design or computer generate your design and print on to 11″ x 17″ paper.
  • Submit. Submit your design along with your design statement for a chance to win cash prizes.

Explore the art and culture of lowriders

Watch and discuss the Interviews with the Low N’ Slow artists to go behind the scenes and learn about their creative process and techniques. Explore the STEAM wiki below for ideas to inspire your own lowrider car!

Research the science and technology behind lowrider cars

Lowriders have a complex balance of tradition and innovation that make them both timeless and cutting edge. Delve into the engineering that goes into making lowriders. Learn about the unique hydraulic system which make lowriders defy gravity. How does it work? Imagine the creative ways your car will move in place. Explore futuristic technologies to imagine new ways to make lowriders cruise, or explore new materials such as pinstriping colors that react to an electrical charge. How might the lowrider of the future evolve as transportation innovations advance?

Brainstorm and sketch to come up with new ideas

Time to brainstorm on the unique features for your lowrider. What will be the exterior material? The color, shape and texture of the car? What will be its source of power? How do you incorporate future innovations? What will be your theme for the pinstriping and graphics? Which medium will you use? It can be created as a hand drawing with markers, or computer generated using your favorite software program or drawing app. Go back to your research and think about creative ways to visualize your ideas. Explore several iterations and hone in on the features that make your lowrider stands out.

Time to finalize your design

Decide on the final theme for your ‘lowrider of the future’. What are its features, colors, shape and style. Transfer your design to the 11″ x 17″ paper. If you are creating a computer generated image, print it out onto the 11″ x 17″ paper. Once your lowrider is complete, start writing your design statement. This is an important part of the challenge. It is your chance to explain to the jurors the theme you chose, the science and technology behind your design, and what makes it unique.

Submit your design

The final stage of the design process is to prepare for submission. Teachers will collect and submit the Design Statements. All the original drawings will be picked up by the Seco Live team on September 25, 2021. The jurors will select winners September 28,29, 2021. Winners will be announced on October 10, 2021 for the closing event and published on the website. Have fun learning about lowriders and good luck with the design challenge!

STEMarts Wiki

The STEAM-Wiki is where you will find links to articles, images, video, and tutorials that we have collected from the web around the topic of Lowrider art and culture as well as the science and technology behind lowrider cars. You can navigate the STEAM Wiki by entering keywords into the search field below or clicking through the word cloud. Word clouds visualize the amount of information available on a topic – the bigger the word in the cloud, the more links to explore. The STEAM-Wiki is just a starting point. We encourage you to do your own research to see what you find. You can type in keywords for each stage of the design process: Explore, Research, Brainstorm, Design and Submit. This will give you resources that you need for each stage of the design process. Remember this resource is an open-source forum that shares links and ideas that others have created or shared – always check your sources and give credit where credit is due. The open-source movement generously shares its knowledge and relies on user feedback – so if there’s something really good or doesn’t work let others know.
